Wild Burros

Introduction

Wild horses and burros are different from their domestic cousins. Wild equines have to continually learn and adapt to the constantly changing environment directed by nature. During their lifetimes they will see life and death and must learn from their elders and trust their instincts and knowledge of their wild world in order to survive.

Three experienced wildlife observers searched for three days for wild horses and burros and other wildlife in Northern California-Nevada Twin Peaks, Coppersmith and Buckhorn Wild Horse and Burro Herd Management Areas. These areas are managed for all American citizens by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and for the protection of our wild horses and burros. We traveled approximately 160 miles over 3 days and 13 hours…

Wild Horse Heard Advocates watched in horror as Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Contractors, and BLM employees, kill a pregnant Mustang. It was quite obvious she was with foal, and worse, ready to give birth.

“We will not forget Jewel, the wild pregnant mare the BLM killed. She was run down with their helicopters. Then without remorse or even the slightest whim of sanity, or empathy, they shot her. This is where your tax dollars go, killing our wild horses. This so cattle can graze on OUR PUBLIC LAND free or at low cost,” stated a Wild Horse Advocate.

The Facts: these unscrupulous individuals’ with no ethical means of approach to Wild Horse Herd Management, chase down with helicopter an innocent and pregnant Mustang Mare. Yes, they run her down. They threatened her at every step. The slanted blades of their helicopter tipped forward in the chase — nothing more…

On October, 16, 2014, the Bureau of Land Management Ely District in Nevada issued a news release announcing that in early November, it would begin a roundup to remove “approximately 120 excess wild horses from in and around the Triple B and Silver King Herd Management Areas (HMAs) in eastern Nevada.” And “The helicopter gathers are necessary to prevent further damage to private property and provide for public and animal safety.”

For one thing, per BLM’swebsite, “Nevada is an open range state.  It is the responsibility of the private land owner to build a legal fence to keep livestock off private land.”

Let’s take a closer look at what this news release did and didn’t say.

This story was co-published with the Colorado Springs Gazette.

A southern Colorado man under investigation for his handling of protected wild horses has admitted to state regulators that he shipped animals out of Colorado in violation of brand inspection laws, officials said.

Officials with the Colorado Department of Agriculture’s Brand Inspection Division have turned the case involving Tom Davis over to the district attorney in Alamosa for prosecution.

“The brand laws are some of the oldest laws in the state. They are there to prevent livestock theft and we take them very seriously,” Brand Commissioner Chris Whitney said.

The head of the U.S. government’s $70 million wild-horse management program warned last summer that it is headed for financial collapse unless “drastic changes” are made in the decades-old roundup policy she said could be setting U.S. rangeland-improvement goals back 20 years.

Triple B HMA roundup August 24, 2011 ©2011 afroditi katsikis

We named this stallion Lion. He was rounded up during the Triple B 2011 roundup. This photo was taken Aug 24, 2011 at the temp holding pens. This was the first day that I went to a roundup and the first time I was at a holding pen.

He captured my attention right away at the holding pen because of all the commotion he made in the stallion pen. I’m not sure when he was captured. This day I was an observer in Newark Valley and I reviewed all my 900 images I took that day and could not identify him in them so it’s not likely he came from Newark Valley.

While walking around the holding pens, trying to get good photos to share, there was a moment when he was staring at me. I…

The headline over the Facebook story could have read: Old, arthritic horse fed to the lions.

The true story, however, has more shades of gray and no-clear cut antagonist. But it did have a happy ending for the hero, a 20-year-old gelding named Spencer.

Spencer was a family horse boarded in Sedona. Once ridden by the family’s children, who had scattered, Spencer had been without a rider for three years. His owner, who lived in Utah, wanted to find him a new home.

NEVADA RANCHERS SUFFER FROM SELF-DELUDED DROUGHT DENIAL

Straight from the Horse's Heart

Press Release from Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility

“The Blogosphere is still roiling over the New York Time’s article, written by Dave Philipps, dissing wild equines and cozening up to federally subsidized welfare ranchers who feel they are ‘entitled’ to turn a profit with their private cows on your public lands. I penned my thoughts on the subject, yesterday, and strongly encourage you to contact the Senior Editor at the NYTs and share your disdain by writing to senioreditor@nytimes.com

But we are NOT off the subject of whining welfare ranchers yet as we would like to share a Press Release from PEER.org that puts into the perspective the ranchers riding across the country to make their point that they have a right to destroy your public lands and to take the wild equines down with it all.  They feel they are above the law and unethical does…
